The Rain

![]() ![]() Roy got up from his desk and stretched. Man he was tired. Working all those long hours was catching up with him. He actually had a three day weekend this weekend which was a nice change.
The first day of his weekends were normally a lost cause anyway because he flew home to Montreal at midnight most weekends. So he generally slept late and lazed around the house.
Today though he had gotten up early and read through a script his agent had sent him. Now he was emailing her back to let her know he would need to review it again. Before making a decision.
Hasard lifted his head as Roy walked past him to the window. Then seeing he wasn't going anywhere special he sprawled over on his back and watched his master. The sky outside was gray.
A sure sign that there would be a storm. Leaning his head against the glass of the window he sighed. He wished Ryanne was here. She loved the rain.
He thought back to when he met her. They had been on the set of Nikita actually.
He hadn't paid too much attention to her. She was the medic on the set and had known Matt and Don for years. He had seen her around tending to small medical needs.
She had been the one holding pressure on the gash by his eye when the boom swung and crashed into him. He was not normally a squeamish person. But the sight of so much blood was unsettling.
She had even helped Carolyn out on some of the set designs. Roy smiled as he thought of the `candleholders' she had whipped up when one of the lighting guys had smashed the centerpiece in `Nikita's apartment'. They were still standing and she was getting requests for copies.
He wasn't sure when he had first started noticing her for real. After the boom incident he would wave or smile when he saw her. She would smile or wave back. He would hear her laughter and smile to himself. She was always laughing. Roy smiled as he thought about it.
Probably the first time he thought of her as `Ryanne' , and not just another girl on set, was when Matt had invited him to go `clubbing'.
Roy grimaced slightly. He generally wasn't one for going out much but he was stuck in Toronto for the weekend anyway. So he said yes. Several times throughout the day he changed his mind. Peta had come up and teased him about going out.
Once he told her he was having second thoughts she talked him into it again. Rene had told Joel that they couldn't do anymore that day because some of the necessary props weren't available. As a result everyone got out early.
As Roy got into the car to go home he was again having second thoughts. But Peta yelled across the parking lot that she would be picking Ryanne up. Ryanne yelled that she'd be ready by eight. And that was it. Roy decided to go and have fun.
Fat raindrops hit the window and startled Roy out of his thoughts. He opened the lower part of the window letting the earthy smell come in the window. Ryanne had described the smell to him once.
"When it first starts to rain it's the most delicious smell. Each drop hits the ground sending up a burst of damp dust. It's like you're breathing the most primitive air.
The past, present and future is all enclosed in that smell. Then once the earth becomes wet the smell changes.. It becomes clean and pure again." Ryanne had told him as they sat on the porch watching the rain.
The pure delight in her voice made him grow warm with emotion. Roy walked to the door and Hasard followed sensing he was going outside. As Roy stepped onto the porch the rain started to fall harder. The drops hitting the ground with a satisfying sound.
"The hungry earth drinking in the nectar from the heavens." Roy laughed softly remembering the day she had told him that.
Ryanne really had some imagination when it came to rain.. In fact when it came to everything. Sighing he walked over and leaned on the column. Running a hand through his hair he wondered again where she was. Hasard stood for a moment beside his owner and looked up at him. Roy reached down and patted him on the head. Hasard grinned up at him then bolted off the porch into the rain.
Roy shook his head. Obviously Ryanne was rubbing off on his dog too.
When she was around Hasard was HER dog. He would listen to Roy but it was her feet he laid his head on. It was her he protected. Roy frowned as he remembered one incident when they had fought.
It was stupid actually. He wasn't even sure what the whole argument had been about. But both of their tempers had gone way out of control. They were yelling back and forth. Neither one of them listening to what the other one had to say. He remembered Hasard lying down across the room. At one point he had taken a step towards Ryanne and swore loudly. The next thing he knew Hasard was in front of her growling at him as if he would tear his throat out.
Ryanne had slept in the spare bedroom that night and Hasard had laid in front of her door and growled whenever Roy came too near. That had passed, as all fights do eventually. But it had taught them a valuable lesson. To listen. Something that some couples didn't ever learn.
They hadn't really been seeing each other for too long now. Maybe four months, known each other for about six. She had met his family. They liked her. He thought about that too.
"I like her Roy.. She's a keeper." his mom had told him before they left after dinner that first night.
Roy looked out over the yard. The rain was a `glistening silver sheet'. He held his hand out and felt the cool wetness against his palm. Then he stepped out into the shower. Turning his face up to the sky he laughed at the feeling. Putting his arms out on either side he twirled in the rainstorm. His hair and clothes becoming soaked. But he didn't care. He felt alive. But alone.
Suddenly Hasard started barking and he heard the crunch of wheels on gravel and he turned. A black Jeep was coming up the driveway. His heart started racing and a silly grin tugged at his mouth. The car stopped and the door opened. The woman of his thoughts got out of the car.
"Having fun?" Ryanne laughed as he enclosed her in his strong arms.
Nodding Roy lowered his head to hers and gave her a deep kiss. The rain soaked through Ryanne's clothes and hair as well. But she didn't care either. Hasard nuzzled his way between them and they parted reluctantly.
Ryanne reached down to scratch Hasard's wet head and looked up at Roy.
"Miss me?" she asked.
Roy nodded his head yes. "But I was remembering you too."
Then he leaned down and kissed her again as the rain fell on them.. Not washing away memories but creating them with each raindrop.
