Gunfire rang out like thunder, bullets falling like rain from a night sky that was illuminated by artificial light. He was dodging bullets right and left and then, just when he thought he was safe, it happened...

"MICHAEL!!!!!" Nikita screamed as she jerked awake and sat up in her bed, perspiration covering her body and mixing with the tears that now covered her face. She was violently shaking all over and breathing heavily. She tried to calm herself down, but it proved to be very difficult. The dream was so vivid. She knew there was no way she would calm down until she knew he was okay.

She picked up her phone and called Michael's cell-phone, knowing he always carried it with him. Nikita's heart leapt when she heard someone pick up, but then it stopped when she heard Madeleine's voice instead of Michael's. Something was wrong.

"Hello?" Madeleine said a second time.

"What happened?" she whispered, fearing the answer.

"Nikita, come in."

**********

"Madeleine, what happened?!?!" Nikita yelled as she ran through the doors to Medlab.

The older woman turned away from the doctor she was speaking with and took in the sight of a disheveled, worried Nikita running towards her. "There was a raid on Michael's mission in Turkey. He was shot while running back to the van."

"Where is he?" Nikita said as she tried to fight back the tears that were threatening her eyes.

"He's in surgery, he'll be out in a few minutes."

"H-how bad?"

"He has three wounds. One is in his right shoulder; one in his left shoulder blade; and one in his chest- an inch to the right of his right lung," Madeleine said calmly and then turned her attention back to the doctor.

Nikita finally lost the battle with her tears and leaned against a wall to support her weight as she waited. She thought briefly about the terrible dream that had woken her up not long ago. It scared her that she had dreamt about Michael getting shot on a mission and then awoken and to find out it was true. Nikita decided that it was just a terrible coincidence and was thrilled when she saw him being rolled out of the emergency room and down the hall to another room. She jumped from her spot and followed, but was stopped by Madeleine as she reached the door.

"Give the doctors a few minutes to settle him in."

"Madeleine..."

"He'll be fine. It will take a few hours for the anesthetic to wear off." Just then the team of doctors that had entered Michael's room with him came out and allowed Madeleine and Nikita to enter.

Nikita slowly walked to the bed where Michael lay and sat beside him. He looked so vulnerable when he slept, nothing like the man he portrayed when he was awake. Seeing him lying in that bed reminded Nikita just how vulnerable Michael could be. She sat there for a few moments and softly brushed his hair with her fingers.

Madeleine stood just inside the door watching this and smiled to herself. Then she left, knowing that Nikita would take good care of him when he awoke.

A nurse brought Nikita a chair, and she set it beside Michael's bed so she could hold his hand. She stayed like this with him for the next few hours. As she waited, her terrible dream came back to haunt her. The details were so similar. It was a little strange that she had dreamt about the same location, and same time of night. The similarities were frightening. Finally, she became tired and lay her head on Michael's bed, just beside their intertwined hands, and closed her eyes.

She was almost asleep when Nikita felt the slightest pressure on her hand. She opened her eyes and glanced at a still sleeping Michael. She reached with her other hand and began to again lightly brush his hair with her fingers. After a few minutes, she saw a very, very small smile curl his lips.

"Nikita..." he whispered softly, still keeping his eyes closed. There was no need for him to open his eyes to know she was there.

"I'm here, Michael," she answered a large smile curving on her own lips.

After a few moments, Michael opened his eyes and looked at Nikita, her vision filling his mind as the sweetest memory he'll ever have. He was secretly overjoyed to have woken up with his angel beside him. "How long have you been here?"

"Not long. Michael, you need to sleep. Don't worry, I'm not going anywhere," she said softly.

Michael closed his eyes and his breathing was even a few seconds later. Nikita lay her head on his bed and also went to sleep.
